We Didn’t Meet at the Beginning (And Honestly, Thank Goodness)

For Kevin.

Before I met you, life had already taught me a few things. Mostly that “everything happens for a reason” is usually said by people who aren’t currently dealing with the reason. By the time we found each other, life had handed both of us a collection of character-building experiences, which is a polite way of saying we’d been through some things. The kind of things that leave you a little wiser, a little more cautious, and highly suspicious of anyone who says, “Trust me.”

We didn’t meet at the beginning of our stories, and honestly, thank goodness. We met after the plot twists, after the unexpected detours, and after learning that hearts are resilient but not indestructible. We met after life had humbled us a little and taught us that trust isn’t something you hand out like coupons at the grocery store. By then, neither of us was sprinting headlong into love. There was no dramatic movie scene, no reckless leap, no standing in the rain while a soundtrack swelled in the background. Frankly, if either of us had run anywhere, somebody probably would have needed ibuprofen afterward.

Instead, we walked into this carefully. We approached love like two people carrying a full cup of coffee across a freshly waxed floor. We knew disappointment. We knew healing and we knew that opening your heart again isn’t something you do because you’re fearless; it’s something you do because you’re brave. It’s choosing to hope after experience has given you every reason to be cautious. It’s looking at all the way things can go wrong and deciding that some things are worth the risk anyway. Maybe with one eyebrow raised. Maybe with a backup plan tucked away somewhere. But still choosing it.

And that’s what makes this love different. It isn’t careless because we’ve already learned those lessons. It isn’t rushed because life has taught us that things worth keeping rarely arrive on a deadline. Instead, it’s intentional. It’s thoughtful. It’s built from a thousand small choices, a thousand ordinary moments that quietly say, “I’m still here.” It understands exactly what it costs to trust someone with your heart and decides they’re worth it anyway.

Maybe that’s why I treasure what we have so much. This love isn’t built on fairy tales or first chapters. It’s built on resilience. On second, third, fourth, etc. chances. On two people who arrived carrying a little baggage, a little history, a few emotional receipts and a lot more wisdom than they had when they started. We learned from the roads behind us, and somehow all of those roads, even the difficult ones, led us here. As a bonus, we also arrived with significantly better snacks and great food, which I believe should never be underestimated as a relationship strength.

So, on your birthday, here’s what I want you to know. I wouldn’t change our timing if I could. Not one day. Because meeting you when I did, after all the lessons, all the mistakes, all the growth life insisted upon, means I get to love you with open eyes and a grateful heart. I get to appreciate what we have because I know how rare it is. I get to cherish the ordinary moments because I’ve learned that they’re often the most extraordinary. The laughter in the kitchen, the conversations on the porch that wander nowhere, the comfort of simply knowing you’re beside me, those are the things that matter most.

Every day, I am thankful that out of all the roads we traveled, all the wrong turns we survived and all the chapters that came before, they somehow led me to you. Happy Birthday to the man I’m very glad I didn’t meet too early. Because back then, I might not have recognized what I had. And I definitely wasn’t wise enough to keep it.

Love,

The woman who now double-checks everything… except loving you.
